Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Book

1. Who goes on these tours?
If it's like all the other tours, some really fun interesting people from around the world. Some will be traveling solo, some with friends or part of a couple. Generally everyone is really friendly, enjoys wine, travel, food and new experiences.
2. How many people are in a small group?
We cap out at 16. But generally the group is 6-12 people.
3. What if I love wine, but the person I'm traveling with doesn't?
That is no problem, there is a lot more to the tour than wine. Important they at least be interested in learning a bit more about it and tasting wine or they will probably be pretty bored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Planning Your Trip

1. Where should I stay in Rioja?
It depends on the vibe you are looking for, most of our guests stay in the little town of Haro or Laguardia. Haro is more active and comes alive at night and is very fun to explore and meet locals. Laguardia also provides evening dining options and is lovely too. There are also several little tiny villages with charming inns if you want more solitude.

2. Can you book my accommodation for me?
We generally do not but I am happy to make recommendations at all price points. However if you are booking a group of between 8-12 people we may be able to book you together in a very special accommodation Be sure to inquire at checkout.
3. How do I get to Rioja?
The closest international airport is Bilbao, 1 hour away from Haro. The train system in Spain is fantastic and you can come  straight into Haro or nearby Logroño.
4. Can HFW arrange transportation to Rioja?
For additional costs we do offer transportation to and from Bilbao, San Sebastian and Madrid.
5. Do I need a car while I'm in Rioja?
No we will drive you to and from all tour activities and your accommodations in the Rioja wine region between Haro, Laguardia and Elciego. And everywhere in between. Additional charges may apply if you stay outside of these areas (in Logroño for example). Do note if you choose to stay in a smaller village dining options may be extremely limited without a car.
6. When should I arrive and leave?
All our tours begin and end in Rioja. Plan to arrive the day before the first full tour day and stay the night of the last day.

Frequently Asked Questions

While You Are With Us

1. How much walking or physical activity is involved?
We wander around vineyards, villages and towns and wine caves. Some streets are cobbled and some villages have inclines. But it is not strenuous or fast-paced. You will need to be able to get in and out of our vans without special assistance. If you have concerns just send us a note.
2. What should I wear?
Comfortable shoes and weather appropriate attire. Rioja is not fancy but sportswear is not appropriate.
3. How much wine will we actually be drinking?
Entirely up to you. No one has ever complained they left thirsty and tasting pours on this tour are quite generous but you certainly do not have to finish your glasses.
4. Will I have any downtime?
The pace is relaxed by design. You will have time to take the extra photos, shop for wine at each stop before we leave, wander around the villages and vineyards. However, there is no decided break times to take a nap or a work call. If that is required let us know we can assist.
5. What happens if it rains?
The show must and will go on rain or shine. Some activities may be effected but we will substitute something equally special.
